Another typical qualifying session from Ferrari on Saturday ahead of the Eifel Grand Prix. It was a tale of two halves from their drivers, Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel. The former was brilliant throughout the session and earned himself a P4.

However, at his final home Grand Prix with the Scuderia, Vettel could manage no better than a P11. This was Vettel’s 7th consecutive Q2 knockout; not the kind of consistency he would want to be associated with.

The disappointment from Vettel was telling, and soon after Q2 ended, the German inquired by how much he missed getting into Q3. His race engineer told him he missed the cut-off by 4 tenths of a second before confirming his position on the grid for the Main Race.

The revelation was met with a long moment of introspective silence from the 33-year-old. In the end, he replied with nothing but an, “OK.” This is not the first time the German has made use of the silent treatment.

Despite being a 4-time World Champion, Sebastian Vettel has never quite achieved total domination over his home Grands Prix. He has only won one race in Germany during his Red Bull days back in 2013.

With Saturday’s performance, he isn’t going to be amending that stat any time soon.

Charles Leclerc dumps Sebastian Vettel out in Q2

As if getting knocked out in Q2 wasn’t bad enough, the result would taste all the more sour considering that it was Leclerc who dealt the fatal blow.

The German managed to push above the drop zone; however, Leclerc, who is having quite the weekend, sent his teammate tumbling back into P11.

Time was already up, and Vettel must’ve breathed a sigh of relief. But his relief soon turned into horror as Leclerc (who was also in the drop zone) zoomed past the chequered flag into P5.

Credit where credit’s due, Leclerc deserves plaudits for outperforming Vettel in the same lackluster SF1000 that the German rides. It most definitely highlights the young Monegasque’s talent, and once the Prancing Stallion can sort out their issues with the car, you’d definitely back Leclerc to be a serial title contender in the future.

As for Vettel, the clock doth tick, but not as fast as he’d like. He’d want to get out of Ferrari as soon as possible in search of a fresh start and hopefully a brighter chapter with Aston Martin.
