Summary

When modelling elevations, surfaces, or terrains, aerial vehicles (such as aircrafts or helicopters) are used to capture data of the study area. Due to limitations in data extent capture by a single vehicle, multiple shots are taken to cover the study region. The larger the study area, the higher the number of raster datasets produced. Multiple raster datasets are merged into a new raster dataset to aid in visualization and analysis of the study region.

Pack

In ArcGIS Pro, multiple raster datasets are merged using either the Mosaic To New Raster tool, or the Mosaic Rasters function. The table below compares both methods.

Procedure

Choose one of the methods described to merge multiple raster datasets into a new raster dataset in ArcGIS Pro.

Mosaic To New Raster tool

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, open the geoprocessing tool, and search for Mosaic To New Raster.
  2. In the Mosaic To New Raster pane, configure the parameters as follows:
  1. For Input Rasters, select all the raster datasets to merge. In this example, they are 090160.tif, 090161.tif, and 090162.tif.
  2. For Output Location, specify the desired geodatabase. In this example, it is Amberg.gdb.
  3. For Raster Dataset Name with Extension, specify the output name. In this example, it is Merge_MosaicToNewRaster.
  1. For Spatial Reference for Raster, specify the spatial reference of the output layer. In this example, it is the same as the input reference, which is Deutsches_Hauptdreiecksnetz_Transverse_Mercator.
  2. For Pixel Type, specify the same value as the input. In this example, it is 8 bit unsigned.
  1. For Number of Bands, specify the same value as the input. In this example, it is 3.
  2. For Mosaic Operator, select the method used to merge overlapping raster datasets. In this example, it is the default option, Last.
  3. For Mosaic Colormap Mode, select the color map from the input rasters to apply to the mosaic output. In this example, it is the default option, First.
  4. Click Run.

The output raster stitches all input raster datasets into a single raster dataset.

A new dataset is displayed in Contents and is created in the specified geodatabase.

Mosaic Rasters function

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, click either the Analysis or Imagery tab, and select Raster Functions.
  2. In the Raster Functions pane, navigate to System > Data Management > Mosaic Rasters.
  1. In the Mosaic Rasters Properties pane, configure the parameters on the Parameters tab as follows:
  1. For Rasters, specify all raster datasets to merge. In this example, they are 090160.tif, 090161.tif, and 090162.tif.
  2. For Operation, specify the method used to merge overlapping rasters. In this example, it is the default option, Blend.
  3. Click Create new layer.

The image below shows three raster datasets stitched into a single raster dataset. The new temporary raster dataset is displayed in Contents, but not in any geodatabase.

  1. Save the project to ensure the output dataset persists in the next session.
