Usenet is a worldwide, distributed discussion system that uses the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP). Programs called newsreaders are used to read and post messages (called articles or posts, and collectively termed news) to one or more newsgroups. Users must have access to a news server to use a newsreader. This is a list of such newsreaders.

Types of clients[edit]

  1. Text newsreader – designed primarily for reading/posting text posts; unable to download binary attachments
  2. Traditional newsreader – text-capable newsreader which can also handle binary attachments, although not as efficiently as more specialized clients
  3. Binary grabber/plucker – designed specifically for easy and efficient downloading of multi-part binary post attachments; limited or nonexistent reading/posting ability. These generally offer multi-server and multi-connection support. Most now support NZBs, and several either support or plan to support automatic Par2 processing. Some additionally support video and audio streaming.
  4. NZB downloader – binary grabber client without header support – cannot browse groups or read/post text messages; can only load 3rd-party NZBs to download binary post attachments. Some incorporate an interface for accessing selected NZB search websites.
  5. Binary posting client – designed specifically and exclusively for posting multi-part binary files
  6. Combination client – Jack-of-all-trades supporting text reading/posting, as well as multi-segment binary downloading and automatic Par2 processing
  7. Web-Based Client - Client designed for access through a web browser and does not require any additional software to access Usenet.

VLC turned 20 years old this month – the popular video player has seen more than 3.5 billion downloads and despite its advanced age (software ages in dog years), it shows no signs of slowing down.

Work on version 4.0 is nearly complete, the stable release is expected in the coming months. The user interface will be redesigned from the ground up. A major feature will be the Moviepedia Project, an IMDb competitor with Wikipedia-style user contribution model.

The new version will also focus more on playing videos from the Internet, relying on extensions to find third-party content. The team is also working on a version of VLC that will work inside the browser (based on WebAssembly). Security will also be a major focal point for the 4.0 release.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the VideoLAN foundation Presiden, is mulling an ad-supported video service (similar to the one Plex started in 2019) as a way to support the project.

The Protocol, which reported on the VLC 4.0 progress, also has a detailed history of the project – how it started, the legal challenges it faced and plans for the future (including sending a video time capsule to the Moon).

Not all changes have been listed. What about playlists? Before 4.0 version creating a playlist was way easier: I played a video by double click in Windows Explorer, paused this, pressed Ctrl+L, dragged another video into a playlist, swapped the order...

I uninstall these kinds of video and audio firmware every time.

I'm pretty sure there are video players that don't offer a standalone feature for playing music AND still can play audio when playing videos.
